Gig Harbor's Public Process Charade

Charade (definition)  "An absurd pretense intended to create a pleasant or respectable appearance."

Remember Council's promise to add more Public Input when 95% of a chamber-packed crowd gave Public Input in OPPOSITION of using Development Agreements to allow One Harbor Point back in February?

The City will host the Cheney's One Harbor Point presentation for the Triangle Property (see date below) but have announced THERE WILL BE NO PUBLIC INPUT at this meeting.  They are asking for a 42-ft tall height allowance and over 4x the number of dwellings currently allowed in this well-established residential neighborhood.  How will the people that live here benefit?

Regardless of this announcement, it is important for you, your friends, and others to attend.

The applicant depends upon your apathy and frustration to discourage your attendance. Your physical presence IS your vote.

Density is a controversial subject in virtually all American communities. While some districts and communities are seeking more density to promote economic revitalization and a host of other progressive goals, density is more often a thing to be feared. Many think that density is simply ugly; More and bigger buildings, more asphalt and concrete, fewer trees and green space, less sunlight and privacy, and even less air to breath. -- Bob Bengford | Municipal Research and Services Center MRSC | April 10, 2017)

There is no obvious public benefit to increasing traffic and destroying the character and integrity of the neighborhood, in exchange for an old building that will cost millions to restore.  If the Chamber and Waterfront Alliance want to encourage the City to purchase the Boat Barn, do it.  But not at the expense of creating a precedent-setting development free-for-all throughout our Downtown.

This "5 Councilmember Authority" to trade for deviations from the Zoning Code was adopted WITHOUT public input.  I believe it is a flawed leadership style that will destroy the inherent scale and character of the View Basin.

In the absence of vision and innovation, out-dated development solutions do not meet Gig Harbor's desire to preserve our character and scale. Buffalove is one of a number of contemporary design teams popping up around the country that are finding ways to accommodate and integrate growth with vision.
